elcome to the last issue of National
Liquor News for 2017! This issue is
another cracker filled with awards
ceremonies, acquisitions and of course
more on the NSW Container Deposit Scheme (CDS).
In this issue we hear from the Shadow Environment
Minister Penny Sharpe who has branded the rollout
of the CDS as “an absolute mess”. The CDS has now
kicked into gear, but there are still multiple locations
across the state with no collection points in place, read
more about this on page 22.
Meanwhile the last few months have seen a series
of craft breweries being acquired by major brewing
companies. Most recently, and coming as a huge
surprise to many, Pirate Life was acquired by AB
InBev. This followed AB InBev’s recent purchase
of 4 Pines and earlier this year they also secured
the Australian distribution rights to Goose Island,
giving CUB quite the healthy craft beer offering in
Australia. On page 23 you can read our interview
with Pirate Life Co-founder Mick Cameron.
In this issue we cover off all of the winners from
the Australian Liquor Industry Awards as well as
some of the highlights from the night. From page
eight we have showcased all of the festivities from
a night where the on- and off-premise segments
came together as heroes and villains to celebrate
Also in this issue we’ve got all of the winners from
the Liquor Stores Association NSW/ACT annual
awards night on page 20.
On the cover this month we’ve got an exciting new
beer release from Kollaras Trading Company. The
group has developed a new range of beer specifically
for the independents. It is available in 30-packs and
was developed to not only fill a gap in the market
but to also deliver great profit margins to retailers.
You can read more about it on page 28.
The retailer we have put in the spotlight this
month is Josh Towers from Red Bottle Pitt Street.
The Pitt Street store has recently undergone a
renovation to now include its own tasting room – it
is innovations like this that help to create a point of
difference and give the independent a competitive
advantage. Read more from Josh on page 40.
Meanwhile, for Norrelle Goldring’s column this
month, she headed to Spain and has taken a look at
the difference in retailing over there – perhaps you
will find some inspiration in her findings to implement
within your own store? Read more on page 38.
As summer is upon us we’ve taken a look at
some classic summer favourites in rosé on page 42
and vodka on page 48. And on page 41 we’ve got
a round-up of some products you could consider
stocking for summer.
Also in this issue are all of the results from our
annual sparkling red tasting, along with some
insights from Wine Educator Michael Quirk on why
this category deserves more attention. Read more on
We’ve also got all of our regular features,
including columns from the heads of ALSA, ABA,
DSICA, Euromonitor and Wine Australia.
